Cold and Low Level Laser Treatment Technology
Zerona® is the world’s first noninvasive, nonsurgical body contouring procedure. It removes excess fat with zero risk and without the side effects often associated with traditional body contouring procedures. Zerona® is built on the same cold laser technology that was developed by Erchonia®. It is able to emulsify fat, allowing it to move into interstitial space.
The technology was initially developed as an aid in tumescent liposuction procedures, but it was discovered that cold laser treatment by itself was able to help patients shed inches off their waists, hips, and thighs.
Zerona®’s cold laser technology was also shown to have the exclusive ability to release the contents of fat cells but leave capillaries and other types of cells in the interstitial space fully intact. The disruption of the cell membrane in the fat cells results in the release of the cell’s contents. The membrane disruption is known as a transitory pore and is the direct result of stimulation by a low level laser.
Prior to being exposed to the laser, fat cells maintain a consistent cluster shape. Within minutes of being exposed to a low-level laser, fat cells start developing transitory pores. The pores facilitate the evacuation of the contents of the cell into extracellular space. Once the fat cells have been emptied, they are then released into interstitial space, where they can then be eliminated by the body through the normal process of detoxification.
A randomized, double-blind, multisite study that included a placebo control group showed the Zerona® procedure to be a highly effective, completely noninvasive procedure for body contouring. Patients who had the procedure lost 3.64 inches off the circumferences of their waists, hips, and thighs on average. The placebo group lost a small fraction of that — about half an inch on average.
Zerona® cold laser therapy represents a safer alternative to surgeries that can result in swelling, bruising, and tissue damage. Zerona® eliminates the need for bandages or anesthesia, since it is completely noninvasive and pain free. Similar noninvasive procedures can cause a degree of discomfort owing to the need to heat the tissue to be effective. This is not an issue with Zerona®, since the tissue does not need to be heated for the treatment to work. Patients are able to resume their normal routines immediately with no recovery time.
Applications of Zerona®
Zerona®’s noninvasive body contouring treatment utilizes the Erchonia® Laser scanner. Erchonia®’s multisite clinical tests used to validate the effectiveness of the process centered on fat cells in the abdominal, hip, and thigh areas. These are the target areas for which the use of Zerona® has been approved. The procedure is done in a doctor’s office and takes approximately 20 minutes per side. Patients lie down comfortably while five lasers are simultaneously applied to the target areas.
